Simplified Sukla Yajurveda - Chapter 10

Chapter 10
Hymns 34

1. O wise persons! Collect sovereignty bestowing water.

2. The King or the aspirant for the kingship says to the assembly. I can protect you, please bestow the kingdom on the deserving me.

3. O wealthy people, O knowledgeable people, O royal women, O military persons, bestow kingdom on the deserving me.

4. O builders of cow sheds, O people of various professions, bestow kingship on deserving me.

5. O king! Learn more all the arts, sciences. Practice yoga. Follow Veda. Acquire the art of eloquence.

6. O king! focus yourself on good governanance (brahmacharya word must be interpreted as focus on the job.)

7. A good king should put children under the charge of educated and respectable nurses.

8. The king, the mainstay of political power, must be protected by warriors from all quarters.

9. O men, befriend your mother, doctors, commanders of the army, persons who studied sacred books, noble persons etc.

10., 11,12, 13, O king! Go to the east, go to the west , go to the south, go to the north, you must be praised everywhere, arrange for teaching Vedas in various places, arrange for recitation of Vedas in various places, appoint and recognize various professional people in various places.

14. O king! You must ascend the zenith in acquiring knowledge.

15. The king says: O God! You are vigorous and victorious. May my knowledge shine like yours.

16. O preacher and O commander, you both have to desirable things in the kingdom.

17. O king! We wish you brilliance like moon, luster like fire, knowledge like sun and a quick mind like lightning. Guard all acts conducive to knowledge and religion.

18. O learned generals! This is your king and our (brahmanas) king. He is the king of devotees of God and devotees of Vedas.

19. O builders of chariots and boats! Create chariots and boats that travel with great speed.

20. O God! We pray to you. Give us our heart’s desire.

21. O King! You are strong and invincible. I appoint you to guard the state politically with advice of wise statesmen.

22. O renowned king! Do not change your faith in Vedas and God. Ascend the chariot and control the reins.

23. We should behave respectfully with learned and religious minded householders.

24. Worship God alone. The kings may be mighty. There may great sages. But God’s greatness in all dimensions is many fold compared to any king or sage.

25. O God, so great are you. O king, your strength of arms depends on God.

26. O Queen! Acquire and use delight-giving knowledge. Guide all females to useful and noble deeds.

27. O queen, you also sit in court along with your husband.

28. O king! Prosperity of country depends on you. Do things that make the country prosper.

29. O king! You have to recognize and do the needful duties in order of their priority even though you are engaged in many activities.

30. The king says, I forward urged onward by God, sages, the justice based on real facts and the fiery strength to suppress the enemies.(into the battle)

31. O king! and people! Try hard to obtain knowledge and exert yourself for prosperity.

32. O learned king! Take care of old people and make sure that old people are taken care of.

33. O government officials and army men! Protect farmers from evil deeds of others. Do not allow them to do evil deeds.

34. O king! We wish: your devoted wife should serve you and take care of you. O ministers and army men! follow the rules framed by the learned and protect the citizens like father and mother.
